Doha, Qatar: Embarking on its 13th edition, the Katara Traditional Dhow Festival, celebrating Qatar's maritime heritage, set sail yesterday and will continue its maritime festivities until December 2 at Katara Beach.
A total of 12 countries are participating in this year's festival, offering a showcase of diverse maritime cultures. The list of participants includes Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Iraq, Iran, Palestine, Portugal, Tanzania, and India.
The opening ceremony drew various ambassadors and officials, led by Cultural Village Foundation, Katara General Manager Prof. Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti.
Spread along Katara Beach, booths at the five-day festival exhibit a range of maritime equipment, including fishing nets. Visitors have the chance to witness artisans crafting dhow nets, enjoy musical performances, and explore the history of dhows at participating countries' kiosks. A variety of souvenirs and handicrafts, such as baskets, figurines, and local food products, are also available for purchase.
Prof. Dr. Al Sulaiti emphasized the festival's importance in reviving Qatar's maritime heritage and culture, stating, "This year, we ensured that the festival program was more open to international participation, with Portugal participating for the first time. The inclusion of various countries contributes to presenting exhibits and performances that captivate the public, offering insights into the heritage of these diverse cultures."
The festival's program features marine, rowing, sailing, photography, and fine arts competitions, along with workshops and artistic events. Marine museums housing rare collectibles provide a vivid glimpse into the traditional lives of past generations during the era of pearl diving. Handicraft shops along Katara Beach showcase a diverse array of crafts, with skilled craftsmen demonstrating their expertise.
Moreover, the festival caters to younger audiences with workshops and entertainment activities designed for children, ensuring a holistic and engaging experience for attendees of all ages.
