Doha, Qatar: Ashutosh Prakash, an Indian expatriate and aircraft technician who has lived in Qatar for 14 years, has made history by setting a new Guinness World Record for the "Fastest Crossing of Qatar on Foot by a Male."
On March 1, 2024, Prakash completed the remarkable feat in just 1 day, 6 hours, and 31 minutes. This achievement was recently confirmed by Guinness World Records, showcasing his extraordinary endurance and determination.
Prakash's journey to this record began long before the attempt. An avid runner for over a decade, he gradually shifted his focus from distance to speed. "This record attempt was the culmination of years of dedication," Prakash shared with The Peninsula.
The ultra-runner's route traversed Qatar's diverse landscape, from urban centers to remote deserts. Despite facing extreme weather, sleep deprivation, and physical exhaustion, Prakash persevered. "The hardest moments were when the cold set in, and the wind felt like a knife," he recalled. "But the support from the community kept me going."
This latest achievement follows Prakash's previous 739.5km run from Dubai to Qatar, completed in 11 days and 17 hours. This made him the first person to run across these borders, surprising many along the way. People, especially officials and worshipers at mosques, were generous and helpful, offering food, water, and shelter.
"I want to inspire people, especially the younger generation, to embrace an active lifestyle," Prakash stated. "Running has changed my life in so many positive ways, and I hope my journey can motivate others to start their own." He emphasized that a key motivation is to inspire his son and set an example for him. "I want him to see firsthand the power of dedication and the joy of running. By pursuing these challenges, I hope to instill in him a love for sports and an understanding of the incredible things our bodies can achieve when we push ourselves."
Prakash's achievement not only showcases his exceptional athleticism but also highlights Qatar's supportive environment for sports. He finds Qatar perfect for athletes and has faced no obstacles in pursuing his passion. "If you have a positive attitude, you attract positive things," Prakash concluded, emphasizing the spirit that drove him to this remarkable achievement.
He also warmly invites young people interested in improving their health to join the 'Doha Bay Running Club,' a free, non-profit group he participates in. "Everyone is welcome, whether you're a professional or a beginner," Prakash emphasizes, embodying his dedication to fostering a healthier, more active community in Qatar.
Looking ahead, Prakash has set his sights on an even more ambitious goal: a staggering 7,400+ km run across Canada, inspired by Terry Fox's legendary Marathon of Hope. This future attempt underscores Prakash's unyielding spirit and his desire to push the boundaries of human endurance while continuing to inspire others on a global scale.
