Rawdat Rashed Road fully open to traffic

The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced the completion of Phase 3 of the Rawdat Rashed Road Development Project, which is aimed at providing a "safe, highly developed road" to link Salwa Road with Dukhan Highway.

The road is now fully open to traffic, the authority has said in a statement.

Ahmed al-Obaidly, head of the Southern Areas Section in Ashghal's Roads Projects Department, said Phase 3 of the project involved the construction of a 14km-long road, extending north from the end of Phase 2 at the new roundabout located north of Rawdat Rashed village, up to Lebsayyer Interchange on Dukhan Highway.

The road includes three lanes in each direction and has been constructed "in accordance with the highest engineering standards", Ashghal has stressed.

In addition, a 3km-long road with two lanes in each direction has been built, heading eastwards to an existing road that ultimately leads to the Al Sheehaniya area.

Al-Obaidly noted that this phase included the provision of street lighting systems, safety barriers, road signs, pavements and all other services and utilities, which include 29km of water lines, 31km of electric cables, 100km of telecommunications lines and intelligent transport systems.

The scope of work also involved the construction of 3.6km of surface water lines, an emergency flooding pond, in addition to new substations.

The third phase of the Rawdat Rashed Road Development Project was implemented by a JV consisting of Boom Construction Company and Lotus Trading and Contracting Co, at a total cost of QR384.5mn.

Phase 3 is part of the main project aimed to develop Rawdat Rashed Road with a total length of 33km and three lanes in each direction, according to Ashghal.

Rawdat Rashed Road extends perpendicularly to Salwa Road (north side), bypassing the Rawdat Rashed area to Dukhan Highway, which contributes to diverting traffic away from the residential areas of Rawdat Rashed.

The project also improves road capacity by increasing the number of lanes and allocating the right lane for heavy trucks, thereby enhancing traffic safety. The project will also link current and future developments with key areas in Qatar.

In October 2016, Ashghal opened phases 1 and 2 of the project covering a length of 20km. Phase 4, which started in November 2017, will link Rawdat Rashed Road with the existing bridge at the intersection with Salwa Road, where a new bridge will be constructed parallel to the existing one for enhanced traffic capacity.

The road will also be connected to the existing bridge at the intersection with Dukhan Highway (Exit No 42 - Lebsayyer Interchange) and a new bridge will be constructed to accommodate the expected traffic flow.

This phase is scheduled for completion in the last quarter of 2019, Ashghal has said.
