Qatar University’s (QU) College of Law in coordination with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime’s (UNODC) Education for Justice (E4J) initiative, organised a workshop yesterday on “The Role of Universities in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”
The workshop was attended by Dr. Hassan Al Derham, QU President, who delivered the opening address; Omar Al Nehmeh, Assistant Undersecretary, Qatar’s Ministry of Education; Dr. Omar Al Ansari, QU Vice President for Academic Affairs; and Marco Teixeira, Senior Programme Officer, Global Programme for the Implementation of the Doha Declaration, UNODC.
UNODC’s John Brandolino, Director, Division for Treaty Affairs delivered a video message during a session and Dr. Hilligje van’t Land, Secretary General of International Association of Universities (IAU) delivered the keynote address at the opening of the workshop.
Dr. Hassan Al Derham said during his address: “Most societies today are working hard to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, which today are the most important part of the world’s infrastructure. Qatar University is always seeking to participate in all initiatives and activities that raise awareness of the importance of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and highlight the role of all universities and academic institutions in this area.”
The Education for Justice (E4J) initiative seeks to prevent crime and promote a culture of lawfulness through education activities designed for primary, secondary and tertiary levels. These activities help educators teach the next generation to better understand and address problems that can undermine the rule of law and encourage students to actively engage in their communities and future professions in this regard.
Commenting on his participation in the event, Marco Teixeira said: “This workshop aims to support Qatar University’s efforts in the field of sustainable development and all related to crime prevention and justice, which is at the heart of the office’s cooperation with universities and higher education institutions.”
