Qatar trying for peaceful solution in Afghanistan: FM

Doha: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani has said that Qatar is trying for a peaceful solution on the format of power sharing in Afghanistan.

Talking to CNN, he said, “We need to engage (different parties) on a peaceful resolution there on the format of power-sharing where everybody is represented; protecting the minorities’ rights, protecting the basic human rights for people, for women as well right to education.” And these are the rights Qatar stands for, he said.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs said that Qatar was recently mediating for negotiations between (the Taliban) and the government but unfortunately events happened very quickly after departure of President Ashraf Ghani.

He said Qatar was trying its best to push them (the Taliban) and stress on them the importance of acting and behaving as an engaging party, as part of Afghan society. “But we cannot predict what their actions will be unless they come back to us with clear answers. We did not sense from them the rejection of the ideas which we put forward to them but we also did not hear from them the acceptance of these ideas.”

To a question, he said that Qatar had no regrets for being able to help and make peace between countries and saving lives of people. “I think this will never happen for us as long as what we are doing with a good faith as a country to save lives of people. Even we save a single life, we will be trying this way.”

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs later said in a tweet: "It is essentially important to combine international efforts to create the right conditions for a peaceful transition in Afghanistan, that guarantees civilian protection and preserves the rights of ALL Afghan people."
