Doha: The State of Qatar affirmed that it will spare no effort in playing its role in combating climate change, in line with its national requirements and international obligations.
This came in the speech of the State of Qatar during the panel discussion on the human rights of older persons in the context of climate change Human Rights Council 47th Session, which was delivered by Second Secretary of the Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar to the United Nations office in Geneva Ibrahim Sultan Al Hashemi, recently.
Al Hashemi said that in view of the significant impact that can fall on all segments of society, including the elderly, as a result of climate change and its negative effects, the State of Qatar has been keen to adopt an integrated approach at the national level to preserve the environment and address climate change.
Qatar has paid great attention to the phenomenon of climate change within the framework of its National Vision 2030, which made the preservation and development of the environment one of the four main pillars of this vision, Al Hashemi added.
He pointed out that the State of Qatar has adopted many projects and initiatives that contribute to reducing carbon dioxide emissions and relying on renewable energy sources, which the State of Qatar views as a strategic opportunity to break hydrocarbon dependence, diversify the economy and create more job opportunities.
He added that the State of Qatar will also host the first carbon-neutral World Cup in 2022, in which the application of sustainable and environmentally green technology was taken into account.
Al Hashemi referred to Qatar’s pledge to provide $100 million to support small island developing states and least developed countries to build and support their capabilities to confront this phenomenon and its challenges, especially among the most affected groups, including the elderly.
