Qatar slams killing of French soldiers in Mali

Qatar has strongly condemned the killing of two French soldiers and the injury of another in an explosive device in northern Mali. In a statement yesterday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated Qatar’s firm stance on rejecting violence and terrorism regardless of motives and causes. The ministry expressed Qatar’s condolences to the families of the victims as well as the government and peoples of France, wishing the wounded a speedy recovery.


‘Remarkable development in Qatar-Tunisia relations’

The Speaker of the Assembly of the Representatives of the People of Tunisia, Rached Ghannouchi, praised the relations between Qatar and Tunisia, describing them as strategic relations that respect the free management of the people, embodying the exchange of interests and practically serving what benefits the people, QNA reported from Doha

In an interview with Qatari newspaper Al-Sharq published yesterday, Ghannouchi said that the depth of ties between Qatar and Tunisia was emphasised by mutual visits and agreements between the leaderships of the two countries and pointed out that Qatar is the first investor in Tunisia.

Ghannouchi said that His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani’s call to hold the Shura Council elections in October is a bold initiative that warms the hearts of those who love freedom.

He added that the Amir’s speech at the opening of the last session of the Shura Council was distinguished by wisdom and foresight, and perhaps one of the most prominent things that heartened all freedom lovers was the bold call for the first elections of the Shura Council to be held in October, within the framework of Qatar’s determination to strengthen the Shura approach and to ensure the participation of Qatari citizens in the decision-making process.


NHRC chief confers with Afghan rights panel chairperson

HE the Chairman of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) Dr Ali bin Smaikh al-Marri met yesterday, via video conference, with the Chairperson of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission Shahrzad Akbar. During the meeting, they reviewed aspects of co-operation and means of exchanging expertise and experiences with regard to the promotion and protection of human rights.


QU admits more than 1,300 for spring term

More than 1,300 new and transferred students have been accepted to Qatar University (QU) for the year 2020/2021, local Arabic daily Arrayah reported.

Qatari students made up more than 80% of the total.

A three-day online induction programme is being held.

The QU has announced that the online courses for the 2021 spring semester for all students will begin on January 10, as specified in the academic calendar.

Students enrolled in postgraduate courses, practical laboratory projects, graduate and research projects, courses of a practical nature, and field and clinical training courses have to attend classes in person.

All academic policies and university procedures will be applied for both online and on campus classes, Arrayah added.


Recall orders issued for Ford, Mercedes vehicles

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI), in co-operation with Almana Motors Company, announced the recall of Ford F-MAX model of 2019 due to weakness in the rear right bracket and the fender bracket which makes them vulnerable to breaking.

The MoCI, in co-operation with Nasser Bin Khaled Automobiles, also announced the recall of Mercedes-Benz SLK CLASS model of 2007, due to a potential defect in the driver’s airbag.

The MoCI urged all customers to report any violations to its Consumer Protection and Anti-Commercial Fraud Department, which processes complaints, inquires and suggestions through the following channels:
