Qatar Sets the Stage for an Exciting MotoGP Season Opener with Bagnaia's Bid for a Third Victory

Doha, Qatar: Francesco Bagnaia, the reigning double MotoGP world champion, exuded determination and confidence as he embarks on the 2024 season with the Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Qatar commencing today.

"Three wins are better than two. I will strive for the utmost, aiming to secure victory once again," remarked the Ducati rider, flanked by last year’s championship runner-up Jorge Martin and third-placed Marco Bezzecchi, during a bustling press conference on the eve of the season-opening event at the iconic Lusail International Circuit.

The 2023 season witnessed an exhilarating battle for the world title as Bagnaia narrowly edged past Martin in the final laps of the Valencia finale, clinching his second consecutive triumph.

In the milestone 75th anniversary season of MotoGP, the 21-race battle promises another thrilling contest, with contenders such as Enea Bastianini and six-time world MotoGP champion Marc Marquez— the last to secure three consecutive titles— aiming for glory.

Bagnaia, who overcame a 91-point deficit to claim the 2022 world title, emerges as the favorite for a hat-trick after dominating the pre-season tests in Sepang and Lusail.

"We arrive here in excellent form. Our preparations have been meticulous, and we’ve accomplished all we planned for the season. The atmosphere is very positive," stated the 27-year-old Italian rider, who recently extended his contract with Ducati until 2026.

"This is crucial for me and for Ducati. Now, I can concentrate on my performance and results," emphasized Bagnaia.

The Lusail International Circuit, hosting MotoGP races since 2004, provides an ideal launchpad for the new season every year.

"Arriving in Qatar and preparing on Thursday before the race weekend is always fantastic. The paddock is buzzing with activity, making it one of the highlights of the season. I believe Qatar sets the perfect stage to kick off the season. So, I’m always thrilled," Bagnaia remarked.

Joining the world champion, Pramac Racing’s Martin expressed optimism ahead of the season opener.

"Last season was phenomenal, but it's behind us now. We are focused on the present," said Martin. "Testing went well. I feel more comfortable on the new bike, and I’m quicker."

Bezzecchi, of Pertamina Enduro VR46 Team, aims to maintain his impressive form from last year.

"I want to challenge Bagnaia," the 25-year-old said. "I struggled a bit in Sepang, but I felt much better during the test here in Doha. I'm working on adapting my style to be competitive and fast."

Marquez, transitioning from Honda to join Ducati’s satellite Team Gresini Racing, is motivated for the new season.

"My goal is to regain competitiveness. Once I feel competitive again, I’ll push forward with renewed motivation," Marquez stated. "Expectations are high, but I'm aware of the challenges I've faced over the last four years. I need time. No rush. I don't expect to win right away; it would be a mistake."

The MotoGP action begins with the first Free Practice session this afternoon, while the season's inaugural Sprint race comprising 11 laps will commence at 7 p.m. under the lights at Lusail International Circuit tomorrow. The 22-lap Sunday race will start at 8 p.m., concluding the Lusail Speed Fest.
