Parents call for reopening of school canteens

A number of parents urged the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE) to consider the reopening of school canteens from Sunday, considering the length of the school day, local Arabic daily Arrayah reported.

Given that most of the students do not have breakfast before heading to school, they stressed that canteens should reopen abiding by the Covid-19 precautionary measures to ensure social distance, safety, and non-crowding among students.

Mohammad Ali al-Athba, a parent, indicated that closing canteens makes the student spend most of the day without food if he does not take a snack from home.

“In line with the gradual easing of Covid-19 restrictions and the country’s transcendence of the peak of the Omicron wave, it is necessary to study the opening of canteens for students according to procedures determined by the MoEHE in coordination with the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH)."

He pointed out the importance of focusing on providing healthy food in school canteens, to avoid the spread of obesity among students and other diseases that may accompany it, such as diabetes.

Khaled al-Maamari, another parent, stressed that many Qatari students do not take snacks from home and this trend is widespread in the preparatory and secondary stages.

"We all welcomed the students’ return to school at 100%. With the Ministry’s decision to return to the normal pre-pandemic schedule and the return of life to gyms and outdoor playgrounds on February 20, the return of canteens must be studied.
