Ministry recalls IKEA’s TROLIGTVIS cups over safety concern

Doha: The Ministry of Commerce and Industry, in cooperation with IKEA, has announced the recall of TROLIGTVIS cups over safety and security concerns.

“IKEA urges all customers who have a TROLIGTVIS travel mug marked ‘Made in India’ to stop using it. Recent test reports show that the product may migrate levels of chemicals exceeding the prescribed limits.

Therefore, IKEA urges customers that have the travel mug to return the product to any IKEA store for a full refund,” the company said in a statement.

The Ministry said that cups imported to Qatar are from Italy and were free from the DBP chemical, which was found in cups that are manufactured in India.

“Within the framework of its efforts to protect consumers and boost safety measures, the Ministry has recalled all displayed and stored cups by the company. In agreement with IKEA, the Ministry will send samples for testing to ensure their safety. Consumers can return all cups to IKEA’s customer service for a refund or call: 8004532,” the ministry said.

The recall measures come within the framework of the Ministry’s role in supervising the recall of goods and products and taking the necessary measures in this regard.

IKEA recently received test reports showing that the travel mug may migrate levels of Dibuthyl phthalate (DBP), a chemical commonly used to make plastics soft and flexible, exceeding the prescribed limits.

“IKEA has since many years decided to prohibit all use of phthalates in food contact products and therefore stopped sales of the travel mug during investigation. The investigation has shown that travel mugs marked ‘Made in India’ may be affected,” the company said.

“TROLIGTVIS travel mug has been sold since October 2019. IKEA urges customers in possession of the travel mug with marking “Made in India” to return the product to any IKEA store for a full refund. No proof of purchase, such as a receipt, is required. For more information, please visit www.IKEA.qa or contact IKEA toll-free at 800 4532,” the statement further said.

The Ministry is also following up on its recall campaign to ensure that suppliers, commercial agents and accredited distributors take the necessary measures to repair defects and protect consumer rights in line with applicable law, mainly the right to health and safety when using goods and services. The Ministry is also coordinating with the company’s representatives to ensure it takes the required measures and repairs defects.
