Qatar's Ministry of Interior said it has taken action against “a number of people” for spreading false news and their cases were proceeded to the public prosecution.
The people in question “promoted rumors and false information through social media that affected the security and safety of society,” an MoI tweet said.
The MoI had earlier warned against circulating rumours which is a “serious offence that can expose one to legal accountability.”
As new coronavirus cases are being reported in the country, there have been instances of fake news being spread on social media, creating panic and confusion among the public.
The MoI urged people to get the information from original sources and to stay away from rumours and anonymous stories.
