Doha: HE Minister of Public Health Dr. Hanan Mohammed Al Kuwari met on Thursday with Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, via video conferencing, to discuss strengthening collaboration between Qatar and WHO and developments on the COVID-19 pandemic.
They also discussed ways to bolster cooperation during the 2022 FIFA World Cup through the draft trilateral agreement on health and sports cooperation between the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), the WHO and FIFA, which is set to be the first of its kind, as it will strengthen the role of the World Health Organization and the health sector during the2022 FIFA World Cup.
During the meeting, HE Dr. Hanan Mohammed Al Kuwari praised the important role played by WHO, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, and stressed Qatar's keenness to support WHO's programs.
The WHO Director-General thanked HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani for the State of Qatar's support to the WHO, other organizations, and countries during the COVID -19 pandemic.
Dr. Ghebreyesus also commended the progress of the health system in Qatar as well as the distinguished Qatari experience in combating the COVID-19 pandemic that achieved such a low mortality rate, considering that the Qatari experience constitutes a distinct model for global emulation.
Dr. Ghebreyesus explained that the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be one of the most anticipated tournaments, after the world has gone through COVID-19 pandemic, stressing that the role of the World Health Organization will be stronger and more important during the tournament through the draft cooperation agreement between WHO and the International Federation of Football (FIFA) signed last year to strengthen the role of the organization during the tournament.
The meeting was attended by several officials from the Ministry of Public Health and the World Health Organization.
