Yet another exciting virtual exhibition launched yesterday on the official website of the Cultural Village Foundation - Katara.
“Culture Collision” by Hassan Taleb Alsalat was the third virtual exhibition that Katara launched since last month. The online show features 14 artworks by the self-declared geek who loves DC, Marvel and anime.
“In these artworks I wanted to showcase the idea of having classical and modern toons with a touch of Middle Eastern or, to be exact, a Gulf touch to have a new element showing a collision of ideas,” commented Alsalat on his latest works on show.
Some of Alsalat’s interesting works on display depict famous cartoon characters placed in familiar tourist spots in Doha such as Souq Waqif, Doha Corniche, and The Pearl-Qatar, as well as portraits of known international personalities donning traditional Qatari and Middle Eastern costumes.
In majority of the artworks, the artist combines elements of different cultures resulting to juxtaposition of Eastern and Western influences which create a fresh and unique take on otherwise common subjects in art.
Prior to “Culture Collision,” Katara had organised virtual shows featuring two more Qatari artists kicking off with “The Result” showcasing stunning paintings by Fatima Al Nuaimi.
The 19 acrylic on canvas works reflect both unanticipated and foreseen results combined in one artwork to demonstrate the comparison between them.
It was followed by “Al Taybeen” focusing on 17 realist paintings by Ali Dasmal Al Kuwari depicting traditional objects and Qatari architecture which comprise a significant element of local culture and tradition.
With a number of exciting features, these exhibitions, which can all be accessed via Katara’s website, make it possible for people to see artworks up close anytime as if they were visiting Katara’s galleries in person.
With the COVID-19 pandemic, cultural institutions around the world have devised new ways to bring art and culture from museums and galleries to people at home. In doing so, cultural entities underpin the great importance they accord to uplifting arts and culture during these challenging times when the threat of coronavirus renders it impossible for people to personally visit galleries and museums to interact with works of art.
The National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ) also recently announced that it would soon launch four virtual exhibitions in various themes namely NMoQ Creates Together, Habitats and Shelter, Qatar’s Culinary Journey, and Mal Lawal.
