HMC emergency departments receive 1,977 patients on Eid Day 2

The emergency departments of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) received 1,977 patients on the second day of Eid al-Fitr, including 1,602 cases received by the paediatric emergency, local Arabic daily Arrayah reported.

Dr Youssef al-Tayeb, an emergency medicine consultant at HMC, said: "The emergency department at Hamad General Hospital received 375 cases from six in the morning on the second day of Eid al-Fitr until six in the evening on the same day."

He explained that 52 of these cases were related to digestive problems as a result of overeating, in addition to 19 cases of vehicular accidents.

Dr al-Tayeb advised people not to overeat meals saturated with fats and sugars, and to compensate with fruits, proteins and vegetables. He also urged the public not to overdrink stimulants such as tea, coffee and soda, while advising chronic disease patients to take medication doses on time.

Further, Dr al-Tayeb pointed out that the emergency department operates 24 hours a day and is equipped to receive all cases.

For his part, Dr Mohamed al-Amiri, head of the paediatric department and director of the paediatric emergency centres (PECs) at HMC, said the Al Sadd PEC received 897 cases and the Al Rayyan PEC got 393 cases, of which three were admitted to the children’s department at Hamad hospital for treatment. Also, the Airport PEC received 180 cases, of which one was admitted to hospital, while the Al Daayen centre got 132 cases during the 24 hours ending at 6pm on the date mentioned.

Dr al-Amiri explained that most of the cases recorded on the second day of Eid al-Fitr were cases of high temperature and cold, in addition to stomach problems. All of them received treatment and left the emergency centres except for four cases that were admitted to Hamad hospital for completion of treatment.

Regarding children’s health during Eid, Dr al-Amiri advised parents of kids with chronic diseases (such as diabetics) not to allow the excessive consumption of sweets and to ensure that medicine is given on time. Also, nuts should not be left in front of children, as some emergency cases were reported due to problems arising from the consumption of nuts

Ali Darwish, assistant executive director of the Ambulance Service at HMC, explained that the number of emergency calls received by the ambulance department on the second day of Eid al-Fitr from 5am to 5pm reached 255, including 162 cases of sickness. Injuries amounted to 87, including 11 injuries resulting from car accidents. The air ambulance transferred two cases, one due to illness and another a car accident.
