Doha: Doha Metro witnessed unprecedented rush yesterday as most football fans opted for metro instead of the private transport to reach Khalifa Stadium for Qatar vs UAE match.
Doha Metro recorded 95,000 journeys yesterday and they thanked the public for the support.
“Yesterday was a momentous day for Qatar. 95,000 journeys were made using the Doha Metro, this really is changing the way we move. Thank you!" Doha Metro tweeted.
Yesterday, many people – citizens and residents - used the Metro to reach Khalifa International Stadium, where Qatar National Team played against the UAE in their crucial group match. The Sports City station is only a short walk from the stadium.
The Al Annabi didn’t disappoint the packed stadium as they crushed UAE 4-2 to reach the semi-final of the 24th Arabian Gulf Cup.
Fans can depend on the metro for the semi-final also as Qatar will play Saudi Arabia on Thursday, December 5 at Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah at 8pm. The metro red line ends at Wakrah station and feeder buses will transfer the fans to the stadium.
Earlier, Doha metro had announced that spectators holding a valid ticket will be able to travel in the metro for free to anywhere all day as well as to and from the match.
Fans were praising the metro for the efficient service and convenience as they didn’t have to face the evening traffic or look for parking.
