Ghana Walking Football Club launched in Qatar

The embassy of Ghana in Doha launched the Ghana Walking Football Club at Al Jazeera Academy on March 6, aimed at further promoting the sport in Qatar.

The event, which also marked the Ghanaian Independence Day, was inaugurated under the patronage of Ghanaian ambassador Dr Emmanuel Enos and International Walking Football Federation (IWFF) for Asia and Qatar president Farhan Al Sheikh al-Sayed – who both took part in an exhibition match.

Walking football – a safe, tackle-free concept – is one of the fastest growing sports concepts in the world, and is attracting a wide section of local and expatriate communities in Qatar.

According to al-Sayed, leaders from different communities in the country have shown interest in the development of walking football concept.

In February, the Kenyan Walking Football Club in Doha was also launched at the Al Jazeera Academy, which was led by ambassador Paddy C Ahenda, along with al-Sayed.

Embassies in Qatar that have established their walking football teams and clubs include Sri Lanka, Morocco, and South Africa, while community teams from the Philippines, Ghana, Nepal, India, Uganda, and Nigeria are also expected to be affiliated this year, al-Sayed said.
