Doha: On the occasion of the 100th birthday anniversary of renowned Polish science-fiction writer Stanisław Herman Lem, on September 21, the Fire Station: Artist in Residence, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Doha, hosted “Meeting Stanisław Lem over Arabic Coffee.”
The event presented Lem’s life and work and an introduction to Polish literature and cinematography through an exhibition featuring the biographies of Lem and the illustrator of his books, Daniel Mroz. The exhibition also included the artwork featured in his science-fiction novel “The Cyberiad: Fables for the Cybernetic Age.”
Attendees were also given the opportunity to screen two short films based on Lem’s stories: “The Room” directed by Krzysztof Jankowski, and “The Mask” directed by Hanka Brulinska. Hatif Janabi, a renowned Polish-Arabic translator, shared the story behind his recent undertaking, which led to the Arabic publication of Lem’s best-known novel “Solaris.”
