Over 13 tonnes dates have been sold out at 3rd Local Dates Exhibition during first three days, attracting large number of visitors.
“So far, 30,705kg dates have been taken to the exhibition, which sold out 13,438kg local dates until Saturday,” the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has tweeted. The Ministry said that 5,836kg dates were supplied to the exhibition in a single day on Sunday.
The ten day exhibition which is being organised by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment represented by the Agricultural Affairs Department and Souq Waqif will run until October 23, 2021. Being held at western square of Souq Waqif, the exhibition opens from 3pm to 9pm and during weekend from 3pm to 10pm.
With the participation of 55 local farms and national companies, the exhibition is showcasing various types of local dates at attractive prices starting from QR8 per kg. The exhibition aims to promote the national product of dates and introduce its different types. The exhibition aims at encouraging local farm owners to provide outlets for displaying and marketing their products directly to the public, which will reflect positively on the volume of dates, its sales and enhances its ability to increase production and develop the marketing method. It is also an opportunity for exchanging experiences between producers and processing units of local dates, which contributes to the development of this important sector.
The 3rd Local Dates Exhibition is part of a major initiative of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment to provide platforms to date farmers to sell their products to consumers without middlemen. With the support of the ministry, the production of local dates has increased to 30,000 tonnes at present from 28,000 tonnes in 2018, making Qatar 86 percent self-sufficient in date production. The Ministry has targeted to raise self-sufficiency of the country in date production to 95 percent by 2023.
