Aspetar making its medical workforce ready for World Cup

* Aspetar to hold ‘Oral Health in Football’ symposium

Aspetar has announced that it is presenting a symposium on oral health in football on August 29.

It will be held at Aspetar and participants also have the option of attending it virtually via Microsoft Teams. The aim of the symposium is to prepare Aspetar's medical staff for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

A component of a long-term educational programme designed by the Sports Dentistry department at Aspetar, the event will provide a unique opportunity for all attendees from the medical and sports fields to learn about the most recent mouth guard materials and raise awareness of the ways to reduce oral injuries on the field, according to a press statement.

Dr Mohamed Alsaey, Aspetar's director of Sports Dentistry and Scientific Planning Committee chair, said: “We have organised many training courses and workshops over the past 10 years, as part of an effort to develop a highly trained medical staff and meet professional development requirements for them through continuing medical education programmes.

"The symposium is strategically being held before this year’s World Cup. Participants will have the opportunity to attend sessions on sports dentistry and learn to recognise various oral injuries and how they affect an athlete's performance.”

The various sessions on offer will discuss topics such as Aspetar’s dental screening - maximising the performance of a football player by Dr Mohamed Alsaey; How poor oral health impacts sporting performance by Dr Peter Fine; Oral health, a part of the athlete’s invisible training, by Dr Sophie Cantamessa; Stomatognathic system in football by Dr Thanos Stamos; Effects of bite correction on performance in competitive sports by Dr Stavros Avgerinos; Optimising the outcome of dental trauma by Dr Jeffrey Hoy; The latest mouth guard materials and design to protect oral health by Prof Tomotaka Takeda; and Athletes' attendance and barriers to dental care by Dr Atef Hashem;

The last topic to be discussed during the symposium will be preparing the medical workforce for the World Cup, to be conducted by Dr Celeste Geertsema.

The targeted audience for the symposium includes physicians, dentists, nurses and allied health professionals. Interested professionals can register via Aspetar’s website.
