The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) yesterday participated in tree planting with a group of students from Al Ahnaf Bin Qais Preparatory Independent School for Boys as part of the ongoing campaign on ‘Qatar Beautification and Our Kids Planting Trees.’
As part of the campaign, launched by the Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar, 60 trees were planted at Legtaifiya Street Development Project.
While attending the programme, Hassan Ali Mohamed al-Mal, Legtaifiya Office manager at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) noted that the project assumes importance as it ensures a pedestrian-friendly environment and adds an aesthetic appearance for Legataifiya Street that connects several major and touristic destinations.
Al-Mal, who praised the efforts of all entities concerned to implement beautification projects, appreciated the students for engaging in activities that enhance environmental values and develop their skills in preserving the environment.
Ali bin Fahad al-Shahwani al-Hajri, Central Municipal Committee member from the second constituency, thanked Ashghal and all participating entities and students for their efforts in implementing beautification works in Qatar. He noted that the involvement of students will ensure awareness among all segments of the society on the importance of environmental protection.
Engineer Fatima Adel al-Zarraa, member of the supervisory committee, said the campaign could evoke a good response by ensuring participation of students and attracting the attention of schools and the general public. She added that Ashghal received a large number of participation requests from schools of various levels.
Nasser al-Qahtani, principal of Al Ahnaf Bin Qais Preparatory Independent School for Boys, thanked Ashghal for providing students with the opportunity to participate in the beautification works and said this will enhance their awareness of the important role they have in beautifying their country and contributing to the preservation of the environment. It’s worth mentioning that Legtaifiya Street Development Project is located in a vital area as it connects many residential areas with important destinations such as the Qatar University, the Pearl, Lusail City, and Katara Cultural Village.
The project includes green areas covering 34,340sqm, over 640 trees, and street furniture including rest areas at intersections and public squares with about 60 seats. This is in addition to the implementation of 10km of pedestrian and cycle paths. The Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar is implementing Qatar Beautification and Our Kids Planting Trees campaign, which will continue until the end of 2021. The committee works under the MME, in co-ordination with several ministries and other entities such as the Ministry of Transport and Communications, Ministry of Culture and Sports, Qatar Museums Authority, Qatar Rail, Private Engineering Office among others. This Committee is responsible for five major tasks including the construction of central public parks, provision of dedicated lanes for pedestrians and bicycles, development of the Doha Corniche and Central Doha and increasing afforestation and green areas.
The committee’s work will enhance sustainability through minimising environmental pollution and reducing the emission of CO2 through reduced consumption of energy resources. It also focuses on the provision of more public transport options aiming at reduced use of private cars and improve lifestyle through clean and safe transportation.
It is also intended to ensure a healthy environment within residential neighbourhoods and places of public gatherings through increased afforestation and landscaping, which will greatly help in reducing the temperature in cities.
