In support of country's efforts to achieve sustainability goals and cut its carbon footprint, Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has announced that 20 percent of electric charging stations will rely on renewable and clean energy.
“In line with sustainability goals stated in Qatar National Vision 2030, Kahramaa continues, through National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed), to enhance the infrastructure of electric vehicles’ charging stations, as 20% of these stations are intended to be powered by renewable energy,” Kahramaa said in a tweet.
To serve the purpose, first ‘Tarsheed Photovoltaic Station for Energy Storage and Charging Electric Vehicles’ has already been installed at Kahramaa Complex at Mesaimeer.
The station charges vehicles with electricity produced from solar energy via 216 photovoltaic panels spread over 270 metres, equal to the row for 24 car spaces.
The aim of this station is to reduce the harmful carbon emissions by encouraging the usage of the solar energy as well as disseminating the use of electric cars in Qatar via providing a unique infrastructure for electric charging stations to achieve sustainability in line with QNV2030.
So far, 19 car charging stations have been installed at different places across the country. Moreover, two stations have been installed to charge electric buses at Mowasalat company building, one for fast charging and the other for night charging, as models for different bus stations.
Kahramaa is working to complete installation and operation of 8 new stations in collaboration with other institutions that include the Ministry of Transport and Communications, Qatar Foundation and Qatar Museums.
Kahramaa is about to complete award of a general tender for installation and operation of 100 electric charging stations around the country.
This award is the basis of the first infrastructure for charging electric vehicles in the State.
These stations will be installed at vital locations such as intersections, shopping malls, government buildings, hotels, as well as many parking lots at Metro stations.
